The Royal Ballet gave most of its brightest stars a chance to twinkle on Saturday night in the one-off gala in honour of the centenary of its prima ballerina assoluta, Margot Fonteyn –  as well it might.

Fonteyn (1919-1991) was the Royal Ballet’s first, biggest and most enduring female star, as well as the chief muse to Frederick Ashton, whose choreography came to define the company’s style of dancing. She was also, at a point in her life when she might have considered retiring, one half – with that comet-like Kirov defector Rudolf Nureyev – of what probably remains the most famous and most garlanded ballet partnership of all time.
