The new Premier League season kicks off this Friday, August 9 (8pm) and thousands of Telegraph Fantasy Football managers are rushing to assemble their teams.

Important note: if you miss the opening Friday night game, you can still sign up before the 12:30pm kick-off on Saturday and score points from all of that day's matches. In fact, you can register at any time during the opening weekend and score points from the next scheduled kick-off.

This year, you can pick up to five for free as you compete for a share of £15k in cash.

Whether you've picked your team yet or not, here are the things you need to think about before the first kick-off.

1. Watch the clock

First things first - remember that the season gets underway this Friday, August 9, when Liverpool take on Norwich at Anfield.

One of the best things about Telegraph Fantasy Football is that you can make changes right up until kick-off (assuming there is a two hour gap between the kick-off times).

Make sure you take a look at the starting line-ups on Friday night, because as soon as 8pm hits you'll start eating into your transfer allowance.

There are some fantastic leagues up and running this year including the Three Lions League (pick English players only), as well as the usual private leagues you can set up for your friends and colleagues.

4. Get off to a flyer

Avoid players from teams with difficult opening fixtures and go for those who'll rake in the points in the early weeks. Our fixture difficulty rankings will help you out here. Everton, for example, start the season against Crystal Palace, Watford then Aston Villa.
